Superfly Better than Kayak?

Superfly, an Israeli startup, was launched in 2011 and they say:

“It’s better than Kayak because it takes you into account. By you we mean your miles and points, elite status and travel preferences.”

Flight Search, Reinvented. We built a new personalized flight search engine. It's better than Kayak because it takes you into account. By you we mean your miles and points, elite status and travel preferences. Sign up now; it's free." There is a green button labeled "Free Sign Up!" and social media icons for Facebook and Twitter at the top.
You have sign up in order to use the site (last year when I had a look you did not have to), and I do not like filling up unnecessarily registration forms, irrespectively how simple they are. However, I did sign up to see what the site was offering.

Next you select the services you use (airlines, hotel chains, ground transportation, credit cards)
Alt text: The image shows a selection interface for linking various service accounts. The services are categorized into four groups: Airlines, Hotel Chains, Ground Transportation, and Credit Cards. Each category has logos of different companies.

- Airlines: American Personal, United Personal, Miles & More Lufthansa, Delta Personal, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, Southwest, El Al, British Airways, US Airways, Turkish Airlines, and Qantas.
- Hotel Chains: Starwood, Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton Worldwide, Priority Club Rewards, and Omni Hotels & Resorts.
- Ground Transportation: Amtrak, National, Budget, Sixt, Thrifty, and Hertz.
- Credit Cards: No logos are shown under this category.

There are navigation buttons labeled "previous 12" and "next 12" for Airlines, "previous 6" and "next 6" for Hotel Chains and Ground Transportation, indicating more options are available.and then you should enter the credentials for the accounts you have chosen in the previous step.

However, ‘Flight Search’ that I was really interested in is available at this moment.

I search for Seattle – Paris, order by ‘Price’ – as usual I might add 🙂 – and the cheapest flight is Icelandair $1,125 followed by Lufthansa $1,259.

However, ordering by ‘Rewards’ brings Air Canada at the top (I indicated Air Canada as my airline) with ‘net value’ of $1,185. Now for the Superfly’s explanation of the ‘net value’ (click on the image to see it full size):

Alt text: A screenshot of a flight booking summary for an Air Canada Economy class ticket. The flight details show a departure from Seattle (SEA) at 08:15 AM and arrival in Paris (CDG) at 08:45 AM, with a return flight from Paris (CDG) at 11:00 AM and arrival in Seattle (SEA) at 08:21 PM. The ticket price is $1,380, with rewards valued at $195, resulting in a net value of $1,185. There is a "Book" button and a "Details" link. A value breakdown explains the price, rewards, and net value calculations. There is also a note for contacting math@superfly.com for questions.I got it!

Let’s see now what Kayak is offering.

Same destination and dates bring: Icelandair $1,108, followed by Air France $1,256.

So Icelandair on Kayak ($1,108) is slightly cheaper than on Superfly ($1,125), and it is the same flight.

Will I use Superfly? I don’t know,  perhaps not as I do not have too many reward cards.

However, I was curious about one more thing: How do Kayak and Superfly compare in the Alexa ranking? The image shows a section of a website displaying search analytics for "kayak.com." It includes the following information:

- A search bar with the text "Search Analytics for kayak.com."
- A section titled "Site Information for kayak.com" with a "Get Details" button.
- Alexa Traffic Rank: 1,021
- Traffic Rank in the US: 225
- Sites Linking In: 8,840
- A 5-star rating graphic.Alt text: A screenshot of site information for superfly.com. It shows an Alexa Traffic Rank of 606,255 and a Traffic Rank in the US of 338,852. There are 75 sites linking in, and there is a rating system with five stars, all of which are empty. There is also a "Get Details" button.Kayak has the traffic rank in US 225, while Superfly 338,852.

Superfly says they are better than Kayak but the proof is in the numbers. They still have a long way to go.

  1. Wish Kayak would buy Superfly or incorporate that type of technology in their searches.

  2. Hipmunk is best of all because you can use ITA Matrix advanced commands and you can use those to go straight to the airline site with that itinerary ready to checkout.

  3. Proof is in the numbers? You’re basically saying that Kayak is way better than Superfly because 1) they have more traffic and 2) have a micro-marginally cheaper price. I have no skin in this game and generally use ITA, but neither are valid arguments.

I wish a website would popup that showed you what options you have given your points (location + calendar award search). THAT would be amazing!
