Vancouver-Toronto-Orlando vs. Vancouver-Toronto fare
It is only around $30 more. When a friend told me how much he’d paid for Vanouver-Orlando via Toronto (there is no direct flight) I could not believe him so I had to check myself. I used for both trips the same dates Apr 22-26 and I chose the cheapest Tango Plus fare in both cases.
Return flight
Vancouver-Toronto-Orlando $869.50 – 3,140 miles
Vancouver-Toronto $838.29 – 2,081 miles
I suppose it is the competition that makes these prices: Vancouver-Toronto no competition but for Orlando someone from Vancouver could fly/drive/take the bus to Seattle and from there fly to Orlando. Air Canada has to offer a good price so travellers would not go to the hassle of choosing a US airport for the outbound flight.
Welcome to the nightmare that is Canadian Air Monopoly and high taxes to boot.
I have yet to drive to Seattle, but I do book an awful lot of awards to evade the high prices, that I may not have booked had I lived in say Seattle or San Fran.
I have even flown an award YVR-ORD-YYZ since AC blocks seats on the YVR-YYZ legs.
YVR has only 1 Redeye Transcons. YVR-JFK and it isn’t on AC, but CX.
Interesting
I feel sorry for the Canadians and their incredibly expensive airfare.
Thanks. I posted a comment to this effect, but it is being moderated. Canadian Airfare, High Price of Beer here, and CC offers are all terrible up here in the hat, and should be outlawed by the Harper administration.
This is not really new news. AC has a near monopoly on most of the ‘good’ routes to/from Canada, as well as intra-Canada travel. Distance flown has almost nothing to do with it – you already know that. It is mostly how much they can charge before PAX consider other options. That trip should have been in t he $450-$500 range, not $850+++.. I hear you. Domestic trips in the US, where there is some competition do better, but when there is only one choice, they hit that 3x button and laugh.
