100,000 Fans and Counting – Air Canada Contest

The image is a screenshot of a Facebook page for Air Canada. The page celebrates reaching 100,000 fans with the text "100,000 FANS AND COUNTING" prominently displayed. Below this, there is a red box with the text "WELCOME TO THE AIR CANADA 100,000 FANS AND COUNTING CONTEST" and instructions to "Please click the Like button to participate and to follow Air Canada on Facebook." The Facebook interface includes fields for "Email or Phone" and "Password" at the top right, along with a "Log In" button. There is also a "Like Us!" button with an arrow pointing to it. The design includes blue and red geometric shapes.

I see the words Facebook and fans and like and I cringe (Facebook down 33% since IPO, yes I still have got it!)

I still don’t know how this ‘like’ is useful for already known companies, but whatever, it cannot do any harm to ‘like’ Air Canada and enter the contest.

Great things are happening on Air Canada’s Facebook page! As a valued webSaver subscriber, we’re delighted to share the news that we have reached over 100,000 fans.

To celebrate, here’s your chance to win some exciting prizes in the Air Canada 100,000 Fans and Counting Contest. You could win:

•200,000 Aeroplan® Miles for yourself and 200,000 Miles for your friend
•1 of 2 Air Canada Super Elite statuses
•1 of 2 Air Canada Elite statuses
To enter, simply click below and follow the steps between July 16 and 20, 2012. Certain conditions and restrictions apply; for full contest rules and regulations click here.

However, by this “simply click below and follow the steps” I had a feeling it would not be a simple ‘like’ and it wasn’t:
Simply get a friend to accept your invitation to the contest and you’ll be entered to win the grand ..The image is a promotional advertisement with a red background and white text. The main headline reads, "WIN A TRIP FOR TWO AROUND THE WORLD." Below the headline, there is a star icon, followed by a description that says, "The ultimate getaway is within reach. Simply get a friend to accept your invitation to the contest and you'll be entered to win the grand prize of 200,000 Aeroplan® Miles each, that's enough miles for 2 Around the World flights, as well as Top-Tier statuses.*" At the bottom, it says, "Send a friend packing in the best possible way." There is a small note at the bottom that reads, "*2 Elite, and 2 Super Elite." The background also features a blue and white design element in the top right corner. And I did this too, after all I was already logged in Facebook – that as a matter of fact I rarely do – so going so far made me do this step as well.

On the left side, there is a logo with the number "75" and a red maple leaf, along with the text "Air Canada." On the right side, there are two smaller logos: one for the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and another for Air Canada, indicating their official airline status. Below these logos, there is text that reads "Air Canada" with social media engagement metrics highlighted in yellow, showing "153,042 likes" and "2,619 talking about this."

The more ‘likes’ the better, but the number ‘talking about this’ I don’t really know what it means.
