Munich in 3 Days

Ernest Hemingway: “You needn’t bother going anywhere else. I can tell you: you can’t beat Munich, everything else in Germany is a waste of time.”

If I had to say very quickly 3 things I knew about Munich, they would have been: the city where National Socialism rose to power, BMW, and during the 1972 Summer Olympics members of the Israeli Olympic team were killed by Palestinian terrorists.

Of course, Munich is more than that and as a matter of fact is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe I have visited. No wonder Monocle magazine even named it the world’s most livable city in 2010 (2011, 4th and 2012, 5th).

I could spend only 3 days in Munich so I used Top 10 Attractions and Sights in Munich as a starting point.

I didn’t have time for all of them so I visited (more about them in the following posts):

  • Marienplatz – Marien Square and the New Town Hall of Munich
  • Frauenkirche – Cathedral of Our Blessed Lady
  • Dachau Concentration Camp
  • The English Garden
  • Deutsches Museum – German Museum
  • Olympic Stadium of Munich
  • BMW Museum, not on list but I wanted to go there not to mention it was close to the Olympic Stadium (same subway station)

And the best investment I made was a CityTourCard for 3 days. It cost 51.50 euro and it was valid for up to 5 adults (the more the merrier) and it allowed travel from/to the airport.

Of course, being in Munich I had to drink bier as Muencheners do: 1 litre mug of Radler which is a half and half mix of beer and lemonade. It was very good at the end of a very hot day.

A large glass of beer with a frothy head sits on a tray next to a bowl of French fries. A fork and a napkin are also on the tray. The background features green picnic tables and a shaded outdoor setting. Even the pretzel is huge.

The image shows a food stall with a display case containing large pretzels. There is a sign above the display case that reads "Große Brezn € 3,70." In the background, there are people working behind the counter, and a blue umbrella with white text is visible. The stall appears to be part of an outdoor market or festival setting.

The image shows a food or drink counter with a sign above it that reads "Hofbräuschänke." Two people in white shirts are working behind the counter. There are crates and containers around them, and two glasses of beer are placed on the counter. The setting appears to be a casual dining or bar area.

  1. Thanks for the tips! Perfect timing for a top Munich list Headed out to Berlin and Munich with the wife and nothing planned ahead of time this list will be a good start and any other great comments that follow!

  2. Different strokes for different folks. I personally found Munich a waste of time; both times. If I want my fun in Germany I would rather head to Berlin. On the other hand, die Umgebung von Muenchen should not to be missed.
