Chateau de Chillon, “Switzerland’s most visited historic monument” and Byron

Chateau de Chillon is a must see place; no surprise it is ranked #2 of 16 attractions in Montreux on tripadvisor.

Tip: With the Riviera Card the admission fee is CHF6 instead of the adult price CHF12. I did not know about this as this rate is not displayed at the castle’s entrance, I found out only when I read later about the discounts you can get with this Riviera Card.

Wikipedia says: According to the castle website, Chillon is listed as “Switzerland’s most visited historic monument”

However, Wikipedia is not the ultimate truth and as I am curious (too curious I might add) I wanted to check for myself this statement. And I could not find it on the castle’s website.

So I went to the myswitzerland.com the ‘Official website of Switzerland Tourism’ and they say: Chillon Castle is located on a rock on the banks of Lake Geneva. The water castle is the most visited historic building in Switzerland.

So if an official website say so it is true.

A detailed model of a medieval castle with multiple towers and a large central keep. The castle has a brown roof and white walls with several windows and small balconies. The model is displayed indoors, possibly in a museum or exhibition setting.

A detailed model of a medieval castle is displayed in the image. The model features various structures including towers, walls, and a gatehouse. The castle is surrounded by a moat and has a bridge leading to the entrance. There are also miniature trees and pathways around the castle, adding to the realistic representation. The model is set on a textured base that mimics the landscape.

Byron also carved his name on a pillar of the dungeon of the castle (200 years ago they did no know they were not supposed to do this). The image shows a stone surface with an inscription that appears to be protected by a rectangular glass frame with a decorative border. The inscription on the stone reads "B. Love" and is carved into the stone. The glass frame is secured to the stone surface with metal fasteners on either side. The stone surface around the inscription also has various other carvings and markings.

The image shows a stone column inside an ancient or historical structure. The column is cylindrical and made of large stone blocks stacked on top of each other. The surface of the column appears weathered and has some inscriptions or carvings on it. In the background, there are stone arches and walls, suggesting that the location might be a historical site or ruin. The lighting is dim, adding to the ancient atmosphere of the scene.

  1. I visited the castle about 10 yrs ago..on my way from Geneva to Italy.Location is superb.Remember taking a local bus to castle. We had lunch in a local restaurant that was good.

  2. I remember the little birds there that were so free of fear of people that they would readily eat out of our hands.
