Superfoods, Not So Super!

When I travel, breakfast is the most difficult for me, lunch and dinner are easy choices, but breakfast is – “What am I going to eat?” – I value my breakfast and I need a good one to properly start the day. And I do not want to go for the hotel breakfast as most of the time is not included in the price of the room and in the rare cases it is I do not like it. So why not have (mostly) superfoods for breakfast?

There are supercars, super yachts, super models, so superfoods are supposed to be special as well. However, “The term is not in common use by dietitians and nutrition scientists, many of whom dispute that particular foodstuffs have the health benefits often claimed by advocates of particular superfoods. There is no legal definition of the term and it has been alleged that this has led to it being misleadingly used as a marketing tool.” Wikipedia: Superfood

For me a superfood is something exotic and I would include here some of the ‘superfoods’ I ate/tested: Goldenberries (‘Andean Superfruit’ according to the label), Goji Berries (‘Himalayan Superfruit’), Raw Chocolate Nibs (‘Mayan Superfood’). If it comes from the Andes and Himalayas and are superfruits they must be exceptional. No, they are not. I didn’t feel any difference, stopped buying them, and as a matter of fact I started to buy these ‘superfoods’ only when I started travelling and I wanted to use up the per diem (my ‘goal’ was to spend at least 90% of the per diem). The image shows a package of "Cacao Power" raw chocolate nibs by Navitas Naturals. The package is labeled as "Mayan Superfood" and contains 16 ounces (454 grams) of the product. The packaging is clear, allowing the cacao nibs to be visible inside. The label also mentions that the product is organic.

The image shows two packages of dried superfruits from the brand Navitas Naturals. The package on the left is labeled "Golden Power" and contains goldenberries, described as an Andean superfruit. The package on the right is labeled "Goji Power" and contains goji berries, described as a Himalayan superfruit. Both packages are clear with colorful labels, allowing the dried fruits inside to be visible.

I tried the following ingredients for breakfast: unfortunately not the breakfast of the champions I had expected.

The image shows a collection of food items on a countertop. From left to right, there is a bag of Kaia Foods Buckwheat Granola (Cocoa Bliss flavor), a lemon, a container of Pure Comb Honey, and a bag of Navitas Naturals Raw Chocolate Nibs (Cacao Power).

However, something that I felt gave me some real energy in the morning was the ‘Goji Cacao & Maca Energy Snack’ from the Laughing Giraffe copmay:

The image shows a brown packaging bag for "Laughing Giraffe Organics Goji Cacao & Maca Snakaroons." The text on the bag highlights that it is an energy snack that is certified organic, raw vegan, gluten-free, and handcrafted. The bag features a silhouette of a giraffe and has a small transparent window through which the contents can be seen. The net weight is 3.5 oz (99g), and there is an organic certification logo at the bottom right corner.

- Organic unsweetened coconut
- Organic agave nectar
- Organic almonds
- Organic extra virgin coconut oil
- Organic vanilla extract (gluten-free)
- Organic cacao
- Organic goji berries
- Organic maca
- Himalayan pink salt

I could not test it for a longer period of time as the store where I used to buy this product stopped carrying it so the jury is still out about it.

I sent an email to the company asking them what stores in Vancouver, BC carry the product and no answer after 2 or 3 months so I did not bother contacting them again. It was expensive but I felt it was worth it and better than having a muffin in the morning.

I will get $50 also, sorry about that.

I thought that after being purchased by Scotiabank they will no longer have this double bonus promotion
(usually it is $25), but they do have it at least for this year.

I used to have a post with this ‘announcement’ but now I have decided to spam my own posts. I know it is pathetic but I am allowed to :).

  2. Can you even find the Goji Cacao & Maca Energy Snack product online? I gave a search and didn’t have much luck except for Amazon which seemed expensive with shipping
